Manchester City Secures Mateo Kovacic in Permanent Transfer from Chelsea Mateo Kovacic's long-anticipated move to Manchester City has finally been completed, marking his permanent departure from Chelsea.
The transfer agreement entails a fixed fee of £25 million, with an additional £5 million in potential add-ons. Kovacic's contract with Manchester City will extend until June 2027.
Expressing his excitement, Kovacic stated, "Joining the Manchester City squad is truly a dream come true for any footballer. I still have much to learn and develop, and I believe that under Pep's management, I can become an even better player."
The Croatian midfielder will don the number 8 jersey and is eager to make an impact on the team's upcoming fixtures.
This announcement follows the news of Ilkay Gundogan's free transfer to Barcelona,
while Manchester City recently had a £90 million bid, including an £80 million initial payment, for England midfielder Declan Rice rejected by West Ham.
Kovacic initially joined Chelsea on loan from Real Madrid in August 2018 before signing a five-year contract. Despite a challenging season in which Chelsea finished 12th in the Premier League, Kovacic made 37 appearances for the club. He was also part of the Chelsea squad that triumphed in the 2021 UEFA Champions League, coming on as a late substitute in the 1-0 final victory against City.
On the international stage, Kovacic boasts 95 appearances for Croatia, playing a crucial role as they secured a third-place finish in the 2022 World Cup.
Man City's director of football, Txiki Begiristain, expressed his satisfaction with the acquisition, stating, "Bringing Kovacic to City was an easy decision because he possesses the tactical and technical qualities we seek in a midfielder."
