Kylian Mbappe's Uncertain Future and Impact on European Football

Kylian Mbappe has been left out of PSG's squad for their Pre-Season tour of Japan. This is the first significant sign that indicates Mbappe could be leaving PSG this summer. Earlier this month, Kylian Mbappe wrote to Paris Saint-Germain to tell them he will not extend his contract by one year to 2025. Paris Saint-Germain seems reluctant to let Mbappe leave for free at the end of the 2023/2024 season when his contract expires, meaning he could be sold this summer.

Kylian Mbappe had another impressive campaign in the 2022/2023 season - a season that saw him finish as Ligue 1's top scorer for the fifth time and Ligue 1 player of the year for the fourth time as PSG won their league. However, it was at the World Cup, the biggest stage of them all, that Mbappe reminded everyone of his brilliance.

He finished the World Cup as the top scorer and scored a hat-trick in the final, which Argentina won on penalties. It was at the World Cup where questions began to be asked: does playing at PSG give Mbappe the platform he needs to prove himself as the world’s best player and compete for Ballon D’ors? Mbappe has yet to win a Ballon D’or at the age of 24, and considering his talent, he should most definitely be in that conversation every year.

PSG have had yet another disappointing season in the Champions League, exiting at the last 16 stage for the 2nd consecutive season, which resulted in Luis Enrique being appointed this summer and Christopher Gatliers' departure.

A competition that they’ve failed to win since the Qatari takeover in 2011, with Haaland having a treble-winning season at Man City, there are fears that Mbappe could fall behind him for the title of the best player in the world.

Mbappe was expected to depart PSG in 2022; however, he dramatically decided to stay at the club when it appeared that he seemed destined to join Real Madrid.

Mbappe himself called and spoke to Real Madrid's president, Florentino Perez, and confirmed to him that he wouldn’t be signing for Real Madrid. However, speculation has always remained about his long-term future being at Los Blancos.

Mbappe is a player who can change the landscape of European football for any club, and whoever he joins will automatically become a contender for their domestic title and for the Champions League.
