Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City are believed to be in advanced talks over a permanent transfer of attacking midfielder James Maddison to north London, which would see the former Coventry and Norwich City attacker link up and join Ange Postecoglu’s new revolution Spurs.
Personal terms aren’t perceived to be a problem, however the two clubs are slightly a drift in their valuation of the fee, although there is optimistic belief a deal can be struck.
Newcastle United were also in the mix to sign Maddison albeit it is alleged they’re having issues getting around FFP after completing the signing of Sandro Toneli from AC Milan.
So with Spurs now in the driving seat in regards to signing Maddison; let’s take a look at what he could bring to Tottenham and how he may fair in Ange Postecoglu’s new Spurs side. Even though Leicester were relegated from the Premier League Maddison was still Leicester’s stand out performer providing 10 goals and 9 assists in 30 premier league appearances.
His playmaking ability, and eye for a cute pass could fair well for Harry Kane at Spurs if the England marksman was to stay at Tottenham this coming season.
Spurs have lacked a creative player in the middle of the park since they sold Christian Eriksen to Inter Milan in January of 2020. Maddison could come in and add some quality in midfield which would take a bit of pressure off likes of Kane and Son and give Tottenham an extra threat going forward. In the 2022/23 season Spurs were heavily reliant on Kane, as the striker scored 30 Premier League goals which saw Tottenham still slump to an 8th placed finish. Heung Min Son also had a poor campaign last season coming off the back of his golden boot winning season in 2021/22. Another thing that hurt Spurs during large periods of the season.
Since the 18/19 Premier League season Maddison is ranked 3rd with 347 chances created (only behind Kevin De Bruyne & Trent Alexander Arnold) as well as 4th with 389 shots taken, showing he is also a major goal threat within range. Something in which will add a new dimension to Spurs’ game in the attacking phases of play.
Leicester were understandably reluctant to sell Maddison in January as they bid to stay in the Premier League, but now having their fate sealed they are ready to cash in on their most prized asset.
With Maddison now on the cusp of finally getting his big move, it’ll be interesting to see how he will fare in the lily white of Tottenham and could he potentially help bring some glory to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
