Wilfried Zaha and Stormzy’s Epic Power Play: Taking Over AFC Croydon Athletic in Style

Crystal Palace player Wilfried Zaha with Rapper Stormzy

The tremendous community work done by Zaha and Stormzy often goes unnoticed, but their latest endeavor to develop their hometown is a significant achievement and incredibly beneficial for local young talent.

Wilfried Zaha, the Ivorian striker for Crystal Palace, and rapper Stormzy are on the verge of purchasing AFC Croydon Athletic, a non-league club. The team currently competes in the Combined Counties League Premier South Division, which is part of the fifth tier of English football.

Both Zaha and Stormzy grew up in Croydon, and a statement from the club confirmed that they, along with Danny Young, the former head of player care at Palace, have made contact with the current owners. The consortium's aim is to own, operate, and develop their childhood hometown football club.

Although the completion of the deal is subject to legislative and governance procedures, the consortium members are thrilled about the opportunity to contribute to their community and provide opportunities for others.

Stormzy, who was born in Croydon and has received numerous accolades, has previously shown his commitment to giving back. In 2020, through his Merky Foundation, he donated £500,000 to fund educational scholarships for disadvantaged students.

AFC Croydon Athletic, also known as the Rams, competes in the Combined Counties League Premier Division South. The club was established in 2012 after Croydon Athletic withdrew from the Isthmian League in the 2011-12 season and subsequently folded. In the previous season, they finished 15th out of 20 clubs in the division.
